Four Directional Ceremonial Basket (2004)

Evelyn Cly offers a new variation of the ts’aa’ (ceremonial basket) in her Four Directional Ceremonial. The center of the basket, a five-pointed star encircled by a vivid red band and ten black triangles symbolizing the clouds, is the traditional ceremonial design. The innovative rim features colored segments honoring the four directions: white represents the east; blue, the south; yellow, the west; and black the north. The opening between the clouds points toward the east. “I get many requests for this basket,” Evelyn explains. “It came from Steve Simpson’s ideas, too. I made a small one for a wedding cake topper.”
