Illusion Basket (2000)

Benjamin Johnson’s mastery of composition and weaving technique are on display in his Illusion basket. At first glance, this basket’s intense black and white interplay may appear chaotic. Spend some time finding the rhythm of its geometry. This visual delight is actually the very essence of balance and order. The design in this very large basket is grounded by solid, bold black in the center and the outer rim. Masterfully placed shapes radiate toward the edge suggesting both continuous outward movement of individual shapes as well as clockwise movement of the whole composition. The illusion is powerful.
