Monument Valley Basket (2005)

“I am inspired by the sunset,” Joann Johnson says of her passion for color. Joann has a gift for seeing the full spectrum of colors hiding in light and shadow. She captures the beauty of evening light in her basket portraying the red rock monoliths and clear night skies of Tsé Bii’ndzisgai (Monument Valley). Nestled in the north of the Navajo Nation, Monument Valley is renowned globally for its beauty. It is also Joann’s home. Using every inch of space on the basket surface, Joann surrounds us with a desert view as if we were lying on our backs under a full moon, looking up at tall sandstone formations carved over millennia by water.
